About Us
We dispense adventure! Adventure on motorbikes off course….
Even if we have never done a route or a trip or owned a particular bike, it is our world to find out how and what works and then advise and guide our customers accordingly. Cape to Cairo Adventurers, Around the World Travellers, Men and Woman in “Midlife Crisis” and “Newbies testing the wild frontier”….they are all welcomed and valued in our Store.
Over time we’ve developed an “EXPERIENTIAL” store (you can TEST the LED spotlights, you can LOAN certain windscreens and spoilers, and nothing is verboten/behind glass/counter/don’t go there, etc.)!
We also have a high number of helpful, visible, branded staff, who are customer focused with good product knowledge.
We try, with good success, to keep a digital copy of ALL requests we cannot immediately fulfil, and then get back to the customer with a solution. It sounds obvious, but we have all been greeted by a shrug of the shoulders and a ‘Dunno?’ at some time in our lives.
Hopefully at Flying Brick you will get …”Absolutely, we’ll find a way to help you!”
Why the name Flying Brick?
The story BEHIND the name…. back in the day, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki ALL had water-cooled 4 cylinder bike motors and BMW was under pressure to bring the same to it’s market.
BMW approached Peugeot for help with a car-based 4 cylinder water-cooled motor and then the designers rotated it 90 degrees to fit into a bike frame! It was an “ugly duckling” and was affectionately known as the “FLYING BRICK”.
Chris owned a Café’d BMW K100, the original ‘Flying Brick’, so the name has always resonated with him.
Why open a motorcycle accessory store?
We never wanted Retail – its bloody hard work! Chris, however needed an outlet to display his newly designed Flying Brick Luggage System and an opportunity presented itself inside a Yamaha store in Cape Town. No sooner had he started; when other requests came in for alternative soft luggage items and accessories and the need to please, be better and bigger was triggered!
So the little monster was born and 9 months later, moved into our own premises; surrounded by complimentary businesses and the area is now affectionately known as GASOLINE Alley!
How long in business?
